Sky or the Bird Present:
Unrelated
A contemporary morality tale of desire, restriction, verisimilitude and deception by award-winning playwright DBHorrigan
Written by DBHorrigan | Directed by Tom Latter
Drayton Theatre, 1st – 26th October 2013
Dedicated to producing the work of bold, brave and distinctive playwrights, Sky or the Bird present the premiere of DB Horrigan’s latest work for the stage: a contemporary and dark morality tale of unravelling characters and complex relationships, as a wife awaits the verdict of an appeal against her husband’s conviction for murder. Originally developed by Scenepool productions at Camden People’s Theatre, and scratched at the New Diorama and Jermyn Street Theatres, this bleak but comic work pulls apart the structures of middle class morality, whilst demonstrating the dangers of a life driven by personal desire.
As Annie awaits the verdict of her Husband’s appeal, she draws closer to Rachel, a journalist, in an attempt to get her story out. Meanwhile, Annie’s husband Martin is pulled deeper into a damaging relationship with Jean Cunningham, a prostitute for whom time is running out. As each character seeks to define a life on their own terms, the structures of their existences gradually begin to crumble, catalysed by the mind games played amongst them.
Director Tom Latter said, “Unrelated is a play of sex and morals, violence and blind love, care and destruction. It uncovers some dark territory with humour and insight. We aim to take our audience into a complex world that inspires laughter, followed by deep thought about the perils of taking control of your own life.”
DB Horrigan from Sky or the Bird said, “We chose Unrelated because it resonates with contemporary concerns about the erosion of mores and values. In a society where the middle class is under pressure like never before, it is insightful to look at these issues through the lens the play provides.”
Dan Horrigan is the winner of the Critical Stage playwriting award for Once Was Home, produced at the Landor Theatre in 2001. His play Face The Camera And Smile, produced by Writers Avenue at The Rosemary Branch, The Pleasance, and Soho Theatre, was shortlisted for The Kings Cross Award for New Writing 2009
