Just click on the right facing arrow above to hear or go here on iTunes This week “Smile, create and carry on”.  It’s about persistence with a project. Believing there is a beauty hidden high behind the brambles, walls and painful thorns. The story of the 9 year writing marathon  of The Fantasticks, the world’s longest running musical, is of two writers who kept leaving it, coming back, then throwing most of the script away and just keeping a few songs such as” Try To Remember”. It was just a chance that a colleague took over a summer theatre 9 years after they started and suggested putting it on that they finally put the effort together to finally finish it for stage. London with snippet of a Fantasticks tune — Marysia Trembecka (@MarysiaT) May 20, 2013   So what project have you started and then left? Maybe you have got a first draft, a half finished painting, a song that needs a better chorus and then recorded? We all have these part-finished projects so your task this week is to get the one that niggles you the most out and spend 13 minutes looking at what it will take to get it finished and out of the door. Once you have finished it and then focus on getting out there, be it on your Youtube channel, iTunes, sent off to a competition, a reading or a gallery then doors always open and weird synchronicities can start to happen. However if your painting or poem is hidden in the drawer then unlike Sleeping Beauty noone will be coming to find it and kiss it awake to really live. Sorry re the metaphor but you get the point, noone is climbing through vines, dust and your ‘ideas’ file to find beauty or great art when there is so much stuff out there to looK at already. You have to be your own prince climbing up the walls, getting scratched in the process, sneezing at the dust I suggest that you do a vision board on the specific unfinished project to get fired up about the possibilities, my first and second posts on using vision board’s are linked up. I am just on the tail end of finishing a remix of my track Londontown. It is over a decade since I wrote it and this current remix reincarnation I love, but even with this remix we have gone through two other sets of lyrics til we have come back to the very first ones I wrote.  You can hear a snippet as it’s the music for the podcast. Also in this podcast, I encourage you to do an end of week think back on what has been done, produced, worked on, booked and paid for creatively. Whether you are a full time painter or a 40 hours a week office administrator who sings on the side, this is to encourage you to keep creating and make the world a better place, one song, poem, play, short film, piece of art at a time. The following is what we need to track each week as a look back in brief, full explanations are in the podcast. How many CV’s and emails did you send out for creative work? How many creative jobs did you actually do, whether 8 shows a week, a gallery opening or a song in a children hospice? How many auditions and meetings for creative projects? How many classes and workshops did you do? How much practise done that week, how much each day? How much money made through your creative pursuits? What marketing of your creative output did you do and what revenue generation plans put in place? Did you learn or see anything new or worth exploring creatively? If it is zero then dont feel guilty, just look at the coming week and endeavour to do better. Each week track these statistics and review the same day every week. Your creativity and bank balance will thank you for it! He wasn’t accusing me, just answering my question regarding his experience of working of some of Britain’s greatest actors of the last thirty plus years. This is the  weekly podcast newsletter where we track our creativity but first I set a 13 minute task of the day inspired by successful creatives telling me the importance of hard work and unrelenting focus as a creative. Even William Blake got his oar in. Brief show notes Ken Collard, his website “The starting point is that it’s absolutely possible, there is no reason why, if you are half decent as an actor, there is no reason why you cant get consistent work.” His favourite quote is by Daisaku Ikeda, SGI President, the lay organisation of Nicherin Buddhists “Press on, nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not, nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not, unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education alone will not, the world is full of educated derelicts. Perserverance and determination alone are omnipotent” “Persistence – you have got to keep going, even though it is incredibly difficult, develop it!” James Purefoy @JamesPurefoy Some of his other gems on speaking Shakespeare I will post tomorrow “Be proactive, there is no such thing as resting. Work begets work If you are not proactive then give up, you have to get auditions, get in the loop.” Sir Richard Eyre, the director NB I took so many notes at his Q&A today it will be a few days before i pop them up on the blog “Actors need to be heard and be serious at what they do, they need to take their job seriously and work hard. There is no room to be a dilettante” Blake’s poem – Jerusalem, the unofficial British anthem ‘Bring me my Bow of burning gold; Bring me my Arrows of desire: Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold! Bring me my Chariot of fire! I will not cease from Mental Fight, Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand: Till we have built Jerusalem, In Englands green & pleasant Land” Beneath the poem Blake inscribed an excerpt from the Bible: “Would to God that all the Lord’s people were Prophets”: Numbers chapter 11, verse 29 All these people were saying ‘Decide who you are (actor/artist/dancer/….), commit and then get very serious about the business of your craft & getting better. 13 minute task of the day So sit down no distractions Decide what you are – actress, singer, painter Write down 1) what you know you need to focus on in your craft, technical development 2) for the business of ur craft What it is that you need to ‘not cease from mental fight’ from Then today commit to doing one thing every day for your craft & one thing for the business of your craft even if it is just 10 minutes a day on each Weekly Tracking Time The following is what we need to track each week as a look back in brief, full explanations are in a previous podcast . In the interview we discuss auditions, showreels, research and the mental approach necessary to becoming a working actor and earning a living as one. The Main Takeaway The starting point is that it’s absolutely possible, there is no reason why, if you are half decent as an actor, there is no reason why you cant get consistent work. Show note highlight  – (please note these are not a transcript but just some of the highlights. The full transcript of the podcast is below) The fact that  95% of actors are not working did not worry Ken. He made a decision 13 years, that there is no reason why he should not be part of the 5% and started on a journey to change that. The starting point is always that it is possible to earn a living from what you do and what you love. It is tough and difficult and when you get work there are always a new set of challenges, broadening your capacity, deepening your work and bringing something more wonderful than you have before. If you strive to create something amazing it will always be challenging and that’s a good thing and make you raise your game. His favourite quote is by Daisaku Ikeda, SGI President,  the lay organisation of Nichiren Buddhists “Press on, nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not, nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not, unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education alone will not, the world is full of educated derelicts. Perserverance and determination alone are omnipotent”   FULL TRANSCRIPT Hi this is Marysia for loveyourcreativity.com, this week’s interview is with Kenneth Collard. Ken is not only a friend of mine but a real life working actor. Recent film credits include Albert Nobbs and Anna Karenina and on television he’s all over it from Skins, to The Borgias, Cuckoo. He’s done some forty-five or fifty commercials over the past 10 years as well. He really gives some great advice the big takeaways, “you’ve got to come from a place you’ve known you can make a living out of this”. This is really inspiring. I also spent a lot of time asking him how to basically do more television and film. Hope you all enjoy.   Marysia: Hello, Ken   Ken: Hello, Marysia.   Marysia: This is Marysia for loveyourcreativity and I’m with Ken Collard, who’s a friend of mine and an actor. I do talk about you to the other actor friends of mine particular when they’re having problems not working. I said “you need to meet Ken, he’s a proper working actor.” What are you working on at the moment?   Ken: I’m working on two projects at the moment. One is a film called The Fitzroy. We’ve done the first main principal photography, finished that last week. We have to pick up in a few days or the end of the month. I’m also working on new tricks for the BBC. Those are my two projects at the moment, just waiting to hear on a third if I could squeeze that in and possibly more after that.   Marysia: You’re in Cuckoo as well. Are they doing the 2nd series of that now?   Ken: Yeah. The 2nd series was commissioned quite early on; the difficulty always is trying to get everyone’s availability. So yeah, in principal, this is the 2nd series.  It ran about September-October, we stopped filming on that but it really depends on some folks availability, if they can work from September-October then that’s fantastic. Andy’s waiting to hear on the pilot, then fox gets commissioned for a series if it does then we’ll shoot on that time so we can make even more. The idea is around September or October.   Marysia: When I spoke to you recently you were doing something for channel 4 trying to look at script for the next day for something else. In this podcast I interview Jason Hewitt whose novel ‘The Dynamite Room’ is being published by Simon and Schuster in Spring 2014. It is a very inspiring story with lots of tips on how he kept going despite so many rejections as well as his writing process.   Me no photoshop – just me The full transcription of the interview is below if you would rather read than listen to it. The big takeaway for me  is ‘You have to hit send’, you have to get that novel/song/artwork out the door and into the hands of agents and the public. You have to be willing to let go of the work you have done and release it out there;  send it to an agent, perform it live, even to when you have to hand over your ‘finished’ novel, because of course we all know ‘art is never finished, only abandoned’ according to Leonardo Da Vinci. He also covers how he managed to keep working on his novel, even when he was also studying to be an actor,  doing a play, working part time all whilst concurrently doing edits suggested by his agent in an effort to get the book sold. Hope you like the interview and come away motivated to pick up whatever project you are working on at the moment and carry on working. Comments are very welcome! Today I am interviewing Jason Hewitt and it’s just an awesome story of an author who spent a long time writing, rewriting and failing, to finally get the really big book deal. It’s just amazing to hear the stories of how many times he’s had to pick himself back up again. There’s lots of great takeaways from how to keep going forward, how to deal with rejection, and ultimately just how to hit send. How you’ve got to let it out of the door. You’ve got to get that first draft to an agent or finally when it’s about to go to print. So enjoy!   Marysia: Hello Jason! Welcome. Thank you for coming in to do this. This is the first official loveyourcreativity.com podcast. The idea of all of these is just to get an idea by creative people on all walks of art in life, how they manage to keep going through the successes and failures. Any tips you can pass on? You have got your very first published novel coming out next year, right?   Jason: Yes, that’s right.   Marysia: And it’s called The Dynamite Room.   Jason: Yes.   Marysia: Obviously it’s a bit different with this interview because I was with you last summer, so summer 2012, the day you got the call from the agent about your publishing deal. I remember it was quite a day. So can you talk to me of the process up to that? Was this the first book you had written?   Jason: No, I had written two before. I wrote one after I finished university which I really didn’t do anything with. Then I went to do an MA in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University. That’s where I wrote my second novel which took me many years to complete and it was that novel that got me an agent but that was not The Dynamite Room. We tried to sell that and ultimately failed after a couple of years. Then I wrote another one which became The Dynamite Room. So it’s been quite a long process. The Dynamite Room is my debut novel but it’s actually the third novel I’ve written.   Marysia: Over a period of what, maybe ten to fifteen years?   Jason: Yes, about fifteen years.   Marysia: Wow so you must’ve had a real kind of sense of ‘I have somethin[...] Actors, Inspiration, Londontown, Marketing, Motivation, Podcast, Writers Marysia Trembecka Actress/Blogger/Writer & Performer of her own shows no no
