In this podcast I ask Ryan about his ebook ‘Be Your Own Publicist” and get some advice and tips on what creatives can do to promote a show, exhibition or event they are working on as part of the selling of their own work. Here are some of the highlights (this is not a full transcript) so listen to the show either by clicking on the right pointing arrow above or you can go to iTunes Love Your Creativity podcast channel The first half of Ryan’s course  Be Your Own Publicist”  is about getting in the right mindset and coaching –  -Ask yourself who is your ideal listener, buyer, client? – What beliefs are you holding that keep you from going  forward and getting yourself out there as a great brand or product that people want to talk about and buy. I asked for advice to a creative who is about to launch a product. The best piece of advice he could give was ‘You have got to decide to make it a priority for you, it is so easy to say I will promote my show but you have to commit to making this a priority, set goals such as how many people  do you to come to your event, how many book copies to sell etc Then ask Who is the ideal person you want to sell to? It is very easy to be general and say’ I want to fill the room with people’ but the more vague you are the more vague the results. Once you can say ‘I know who I want now’ in the  ‘Ryan Lock branded way’ and the reason why you want to target those people then you  can get clear on how to market your service or event to them. So you know what to say to them, marketing materials etc. If you have a friend who is like your ideal client or buyer, write a description of them and ask them what would make them go to an exhibition or book launch. Really important to be fully behind what you are doing Make sure you do believe in yourself You should be your own best publicist. If u know who you are going after eg bloggers or press, the path is clear as  you have got a specific message that is easier to sell. When you are doing a launch, the clearer you are on who you want there and how to get them there, clarity will give you better results. His advice on dealing with failure was fantastic. Failure – really acknowledge how you feel, first step through anything is being conscious of it, once you have calmed down, reframe your situation. He gives a great example of dong this with rejected writing, reframing and refocusing the article to a different market. Ask ‘what can I use from this  piece of work and process” where you have created something or a piece of work. “What can I now do to make this frustration work for me” such as  change the title and some of the content, hassle your contacts and sell it. It is easy to wish and sit there with folded arms saying why is no-one writing about my product but opportunities only come from being pro-active. I asked ‘How do you think we can balance the time it takes to create the event and the marketing and press  plus the social media Put systems in place Hootsuite.com to automate as much as you can Balance the process, using different sides of your brain, so for work effectiveness you must treat it like a job, really schedule things in. Schedule appointments with yourself, Tips for calling journalists If you are inviting journalists down to see your work, get in right head space What to say to yourself – “This is just a job, nothing personal,  they are very busy people so if they are snappy or not interested you have to realise that it’s not you. Write down description of yourself as a brand, it helps to be objective,  and then when you calling people you not selling yourself but your work. Make sure the journalist you are calling is the right one It is hard to receive negativity as a writer, painter, actor or artist as you are your work and your brand, understandable that there are strong emotional attachments but the wall you have to go through to journalists no[...] Networking, Podcast Marysia Trembecka Actress/Blogger/Writer & Performer of her own shows no no Important Dates: Dream, create & make money in the arts 4 https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/07/important-dates-dream-create-make-money-in-the-arts-4/ https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/07/important-dates-dream-create-make-money-in-the-arts-4/#comments Tue, 07 May 2013 15:47:38 +0000 http://loveyourcreativity.com/?p=535 https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/07/important-dates-dream-create-make-money-in-the-arts-4/feed/ 1 Dream, create & make money in the arts – Go Local! https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/06/dream-create-make-money-in-the-arts-pt-3-go-local/ https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/06/dream-create-make-money-in-the-arts-pt-3-go-local/#respond Mon, 06 May 2013 13:27:26 +0000 http://loveyourcreativity.com/?p=521 https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/06/dream-create-make-money-in-the-arts-pt-3-go-local/feed/ 0 How to be successful: Dream, create & make money in the arts 1 https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/03/how-to-be-successful-dream-create-make-money-in-the-arts-1/ https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/03/how-to-be-successful-dream-create-make-money-in-the-arts-1/#comments Fri, 03 May 2013 21:11:48 +0000 http://loveyourcreativity.com/?p=494 https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/03/how-to-be-successful-dream-create-make-money-in-the-arts-1/feed/ 14 Art, film, writing scholarships/competitions list https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/03/art-film-writing-scholarshipscompetitions-list/ https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/03/art-film-writing-scholarshipscompetitions-list/#comments Fri, 03 May 2013 09:22:45 +0000 http://loveyourcreativity.com/?p=477 https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/03/art-film-writing-scholarshipscompetitions-list/feed/ 1 Acting business: 10 Tips from a casting director & an agent https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/01/10-tips-from-a-casting-director-agent-a-working-actor/ https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/01/10-tips-from-a-casting-director-agent-a-working-actor/#comments Wed, 01 May 2013 20:47:39 +0000 http://loveyourcreativity.com/?p=472 https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/05/01/10-tips-from-a-casting-director-agent-a-working-actor/feed/ 7 8 creative competitions & submission requests https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/04/25/8-creative-competitions-submission-requests/ https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/04/25/8-creative-competitions-submission-requests/#respond Thu, 25 Apr 2013 23:19:53 +0000 http://loveyourcreativity.com/?p=446 https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/04/25/8-creative-competitions-submission-requests/feed/ 0 Podcast: Pop Up Event: World Book Night in London https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/04/24/podcast-pop-up-theatre-in-the-community-for-world-book-night/ https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/04/24/podcast-pop-up-theatre-in-the-community-for-world-book-night/#comments Wed, 24 Apr 2013 10:50:25 +0000 http://loveyourcreativity.com/?p=388 https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/04/24/podcast-pop-up-theatre-in-the-community-for-world-book-night/feed/ 1 0:16:26 This is a special mid week “Pop Up Creativity in your Community’ Love Your Creativity Podcast to keep myself and you focused on creativity. This is some clips and conversation from an event I was involved in last night for Shakespeare’s Birthday, World Book Night and Brent Libraries drive to celebrate art, literature and music in their local community. So a big shout out to Brent Libraries for this at a time where some many councils are cutting the arts There were free books given out and a book reading from Imogen Robertson from her new novel ‘The Paris Winter” as well as her talking through her writing life from autumns’ spent in the British Library researching to then the first draft and Page 70 ‘hell’ where she always feels lost. She says she was listening to Ian Rankin talk about the difficult bit in his book writing and it always comes at 30% of the way in. Imogen looked up to see her husband pointing at her ‘Thats where you always find it difficult’ As a 5 times book published author she said she found it comforting that other authors go through the same issues.   Coffee and organic ginger and chocolate cake was provided by Dylans Delights (yum). This newsletter sets a 13 minute creative exercise with a full explanation of the weekly tracking where I encourage you to do an end of week think back on what has been done, produced, worked on, booked and paid for creatively. (I don’t mean you are doing ‘creative accounting”!) Whether you are a full time painter or a 40 hours a week office administrator who sings on the side, this is to encourage you to keep creating and make the world a better place, one song, poem, piece of art at a time. The following is what we need to track each week as a look back in brief, full explanations are in the podcast. How many CV’s and emails did you send out for creative work? How many creative jobs did you actually do, whether 8 shows a week, a gallery opening or a song in a children hospice? How many auditions and meetings for creative projects? How many classes and workshops did you do? How much practise done that week, how much each day? How much money made through your creative pursuits? What marketing of your creative output did you do and what revenue generation plans put in place? Did you learn or see anything new or worth exploring creatively? If it is zero then dont feel guilty, just look at the coming week and endeavour to do better. Each week track these statistics and review the same day every week. Your creativity and bank balance will thank you for it! I also have written a mini tracking tune for you to sing along to while you track, attached here for quick refreshment at moments of creative despair.. I thin I have just written my first Love Your Creativity tune (oh dear I see an album before me!) If it feels like a passion just do it cos you get better by doing it.  Go with repetition and try something again and again or in different ways but you learn by repetition” She shares Tips on believing in yourself & your creativity “Just do it .. be driven by the spiritual’, Write affirmations before starting your work eg “I paint to my highest level so I might serve and inspire humanity’ “ I do 25 affirmations  before i do anything.” “Whenever i don’t do the affirmations the difference is huge. it’s the ego thats stops so many of us, and sabotaging our work.” These affirmations settle the ego down and bring her higher being up into more elevated state and in the bliss of the moment “Failure… i dont read reviews.” Full Transcript Follows Hi this is Marysia at loveyourcreativity.com, this podcast interview is with Liz Ranken who is an everything, a movement director, a painter, a physical theatre practioner, a writer. Not only does she create in many ways but she’s also hugely successful in all of these areas. One of her paintings is in the National Portrait Gallery. She has worked at over fifty productions at the Royal Shakespeare Company and has been involved in huge amounts of ground breaking theatre and dance work in the UK. She really is legendary and wonderful. She talks about all of this in this podcast and her spiritual practice, how she really gets her ego out of the way, how she has explored doing affirmations and proper physical and spiritual warm up before she starts work which has had a huge impact on her ability to create. Her big takeaway that she keeps coming back to is “just do it, don’t care what others say. If it feels like it’s a passion, do it because you’re going to get better at doing it, so do it”. Now Seth Godin in his startup school podcasts says when he wishes when he first started working as a freelancer that he would’ve asked each client at the end of each job to give him a testimonial which he could then laminate, put in a folder and build a body of work and show him new clients. Liz has an amazing testimonial.   I said to Liz that I’d like to start the show by asking if there was any real memorable moments for her that made her think she made it [...] Fun, Inspiration, Motivation, Podcast Marysia Trembecka Actress/Blogger/Writer & Performer of her own shows no no 15 practical tips on acting & getting rebooked on low budget & student films https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/04/17/15-practical-tips-on-acting-getting-rebooked-on-low-budget-student-films/ https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/04/17/15-practical-tips-on-acting-getting-rebooked-on-low-budget-student-films/#comments Wed, 17 Apr 2013 12:04:06 +0000 http://loveyourcreativity.com/?p=289 https://loveyourcreativity.com/2013/04/17/15-practical-tips-on-acting-getting-rebooked-on-low-budget-student-films/feed/ 2 No complaining. In this podcast I interview Jason Hewitt whose novel ‘The Dynamite Room’ is being published by Simon and Schuster in Spring 2014. It is a very inspiring story with lots of tips on how he kept going despite so many rejections as well as his writing process.   Me no photoshop – just me The full transcription of the interview is below if you would rather read than listen to it. The big takeaway for me  is ‘You have to hit send’, you have to get that novel/song/artwork out the door and into the hands of agents and the public. You have to be willing to let go of the work you have done and release it out there;  send it to an agent, perform it live, even to when you have to hand over your ‘finished’ novel, because of course we all know ‘art is never finished, only abandoned’ according to Leonardo Da Vinci. He also covers how he managed to keep working on his novel, even when he was also studying to be an actor,  doing a play, working part time all whilst concurrently doing edits suggested by his agent in an effort to get the book sold. Hope you like the interview and come away motivated to pick up whatever project you are working on at the moment and carry on working. Comments are very welcome! Today I am interviewing Jason Hewitt and it’s just an awesome story of an author who spent a long time writing, rewriting and failing, to finally get the really big book deal. It’s just amazing to hear the stories of how many times he’s had to pick himself back up again. There’s lots of great takeaways from how to keep going forward, how to deal with rejection, and ultimately just how to hit send. How you’ve got to let it out of the door. You’ve got to get that first draft to an agent or finally when it’s about to go to print. So enjoy!   Marysia: Hello Jason! Welcome. Thank you for coming in to do this. This is the first official loveyourcreativity.com podcast. The idea of all of these is just to get an idea by creative people on all walks of art in life, how they manage to keep going through the successes and failures. Any tips you can pass on? You have got your very first published novel coming out next year, right?   Jason: Yes, that’s right.   Marysia: And it’s called The Dynamite Room.   Jason: Yes.   Marysia: Obviously it’s a bit different with this interview because I was with you last summer, so summer 2012, the day you got the call from the agent about your publishing deal. I remember it was quite a day. So can you talk to me of the process up to that? Was this the first book you had written?   Jason: No, I had written two before. I wrote one after I finished university which I really didn’t do anything with. Then I went to do an MA in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University. That’s where I wrote my second novel which took me many years to complete and it was that novel that got me an agent but that was not The Dynamite Room. We tried to sell that and ultimately failed after a couple of years. Then I wrote another one which became The Dynamite Room. So it’s been quite a long process. The Dynamite Room is my debut novel but it’s actually the third novel I’ve written.   Marysia: Over a period of what, maybe ten to fifteen years?   Jason: Yes, about fifteen years.   Marysia: Wow so you must’ve had a real kind of sense of ‘I have somethin[...] Actors, Inspiration, Londontown, Marketing, Motivation, Podcast, Writers Marysia Trembecka Actress/Blogger/Writer & Performer of her own shows no no
