Happy Monday everyone đ I only really have one rule in my life which is “FUCK GUILT”. I don’t swear very often, and I don’t like hearing others swear much either. However this is my exception as I feel so strongly about this. I used to have remind myself of it a lot but now it comes more naturally and I remind others. I yell it at myself when I feel guilt creeping in and I make my friends yell it with me when they are feeling bad.
I am not saying that I do not mess up but I chose to not feel guilty and instead use that energy to do something more productive and constructive about my behaviour to ensure I do not behave that way again whether it is towards myself and others. Niki Flacks the acting coach actually gets the room to yell FUCK GUILT. I suggest you try it today, in the office or in the pub, You will feel better đ
The great news is that there is scientific evidence that guilt actually makes you overindulge more.
Some research Kelly McGonigal, PhD, Author and Stanford University psychologist mentions in her new book is that
‘The worse people feel about overindulging such as drink, gambling, eating too many cookies then the more likely they are to continue to overindulge. The worse procrastinators feel about putting things off, the longer they procrastinate the next time they get the opportunity.’ So talk to yourself, be aware you have a tendency to feel hard on yourself, and the emotions you feel coming off that overindulgence and remind yourself that failing is part of any process of reaching a goal and then remind yourself to get back onto achieving your goal.
I mention this as we head towards Christmas and the overindulgence beckons with many of us also saying ‘In the New Year I will eat less, train more, write that novel, put on that play’…
